Chaperone with the African Children’s Choir™

This is the chance of a lifetime to join one of the most unique choirs in the world, showcasing the hope of Africa’s children and unlocking the unlimited potential of the inspirational Choir children! Mentor them, serving as a tour “Auntie” or ‘Uncle” for a minimum of 12 months on tour.

Upcoming tours may visit the USA, Canada, the UK, and possibly areas in continental Europe.

As a Chaperone…

Each Choir consists of between 22 to 26 children in the care of 8 to 10 chaperones. The team is a hybrid of cultures; Ugandan, Kenyan, South African, American, Canadian, British, Scottish, and Irish are often represented. Of these chaperones, 2 to 3 are from the children’s country of origin.

Chaperones are the primary caretakers for the Choir children. Playtime and travel supervision, helping with school work, bedtime devotions, and making sure everyone eats their veggies are a few of the day–to–day activities as a mentor and parent figure to the children.

Chaperones are also responsible for the on-the-ground operations of touring. This includes routine jobs for each concert performance and tasks throughout the week like schooling, rehearsals, tour logistics, organizing the bus, and more.  Teamwork is essential. The work is physically and professionally challenging, but very satisfying.  To accomplish this, chaperones apply practical skills in various tour roles such as:

  • Bus Driver
  • Sound Technician
  • Head Teacher or Teacher
  • Administrator
  • Music Supervisor
  • Conductor
  • Product Sales
  • Tour Leader

“Home” quickly becomes the bus, and the many halls, churches, and families that host the Choir. The Choir travels from venue to venue on their re-fitted bus, relying on the warm hospitality of host families to provide them and the children with food, accommodations, social interaction, and sometimes even special activities.

Financial Support

The African Children’s Choir cannot thank its chaperones enough for their personal sacrifice as unpaid tour staff. Volunteering is essential to keeping tour expenses low, allowing as much money as possible, raised by the tour, to fund the projects in Africa.

Chaperones choose to financially support themselves or raise financial support to cover their basic personal expenses, which includes expenses like major flights, travel medical insurance, a monthly allowance, etc. The African Children’s Choir™ staff offers advice and assistance with any fundraising efforts.
